Sesderma Renews Its Image

We have just changed our logo! The logo change is the first step in a complete rebranding that will take place. We choose the slogan "listening to your skin" because our objective is to give your skin what it needs to stay healthy.

A few weeks ago we presented our new corporate logo, and now we can present the lines that will eventually mark the packaging of Sesderma products. Cul de Sac has followed a long Sesderma identity study to understand what our business philosophy is, and what makes us who we are.

The image to the right is an example of the packaging of the dermatological ‘HEALTH’ line. It is predominantly white, representing its therapeutic nature. The ‘BEAUTY’ line corresponds to our dermocosmetic line and is mainly colored. In addition, the NANOTECH logo appears on products which contain active ingredients encapsulated in liposomes. The logo shown here is a representation of a nanosome, and its designs consists of a series of concentric connected circles. The center contains the letters NT, referring to NANOTECH, a concept that from now on will identify nanotechnology at Sesderma. It is important to understand and know how to explain this because a large part of our products from now on will use nanotechnology.

Keep an eye out, because soon we will be re-designing our website to fit the new cooperate image.

C-Vit Liposomal Serum receives award for "Most innovative anti-aging product of 2011"

Our C-Vit Liposomal Serum won the prize as the ‘Most Innovative Anti-aging Product in 2011’ in the 'Cosmetic and Pharmacy Awards'! The sixth edition of these awards, organized by the Spanish weekly magazine ‘Correo Farmacéutico’, broke the participation record with a total of 120 nominations, and 1,137 votes, a figure that far exceeds previous editions.

After passing an initial screening of a panel composed of José Carlos Moreno, president of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology, Cristina Tiemblo, national voice of the “Consejo General de Colegios Farmacéuticos” through the“Vocalía Nacional de Dermofarmacia” and Mª Jesús Lucero, professor at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Seville; actual pharmacists were the those who determined that this product was the most innovative, giving even more merit to this award.

Other products that came in behind the C-VIT Liposomal Serum in the same category were products from Avéne, SkinCeuticals, Caudalie and Lierac.
In 2007 another Sesderma product, specifically Fillderma Nano, received the same recognition.

The peeling system is made with ferulic, phloretin, fruit acids and retinoids. The main ingredient in the product line is ferulic acid, an active ingredient abundantly present in the walls of plant cells (rice, wheat, oats, soy). Its properties underline a powerful antioxidant activity, not only capable of capturing free radicals which cause cellular damage, but also strengthening the effectiveness of other natural antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E, maintaining the cellular DNA. As a photo protector it diminishes UVB and UVA rays minimizing solar damage.

As an anti-inflammatory, it reduces the area of edema and as a depigmentant, it diminishes the tyrosine enzyme activity, responsible for the production of melanin within the melanocyte, which is where the cell produces melanin.

Phloretin, another active ingredient in the Ferulac Product line, acts synergistically with ferulic acid, empowering its antioxidant activity, in addition to facilitating the penetration of the other active ingredients. Also it inhibits elastase activity, the protein responsible for the degradation of the elastin fibers in the dermal matrix.

Fruit acids (malic, citric and lactic acid) enhance the exfoliating properties of the treatment, retinoids act on the deepest layers of the skin stimulating, repairing and protecting the collagen, and clarifying spots to regulate melanocyte activity.

The peel may be applied weekly, and in a few sessions the texture and roughness of the skin begins to improve. It becomes lighter in color, and shows a spectacular lifting effect.

INTRO TO CHEMICAL PEELING

In technical terms, the word peeling means shedding or scaling, including exfoliation. In other words, generating by one or various mechanisms the controlled and rational loss of one or more layers of the skin. This effect can be caused chemically by using substances in solutions, mechanically by using for example diamond crystals, silica or aluminum hydroxide (microdermabrasion), or caloric with the use of ablative lasers.
In dermo-cosmetics, this technique produces an accelerated cell renovation of the skin layers with diverse objectives like cleansing, nourishing, moisturizing, astringency, de-pigmentation remodelling effects, etc.

Immediate epidermal effects:

- Reduction of cohesion of corneocytes in the lower stratum corneum, facilitating their elimination.
- Union between the stratum corneum and stratum granulosum.
- Fewer filaments in the cytoplasm of basal cells.
- More uniform dispersion of melanin, regulates the melanocyte population and eliminates the extra cellular pigmentation.
- Skin is more consistent to the touch, smoother, and pinker.

Delayed dermal effects:

- Increase the thickness of the epidermis and papillary dermis with proliferation of fibroblasts (collagen and elastin synthesis).
- Increase of glycosaminoglycans (hyaluronic and basic intracellular sustenance)
- Increased production of collagen, with more fibers which are better organized.
- Improved quality of elastin fibers; longer and less fragmented.
- Evident reduction of wrinkles and non fibrous scars.

The results are better hydrated, soft and smooth skin, reduction in the depth of wrinkles and scars, and an attenuation or elimination of pigment spots. Improvement can be made in pathologies depending on the selected active ingredients.

Chemical peeling is a good, hardly evasive option, which helps maintain healthy, cosmetically beautiful skin which inhibits and even reverses the effects of aging, helping to improve existing conditions and can be combined with other procedures such as microdermabrasion, mesotherapy, laser and IPL's, botulinum toxin and dermal fillers.

Chemical peels can make a difference at different depths in the skin, and accordingly, are divided as follows:

a) Very superficial (only the stratum corneum).
b) Surface (to the basal layer).
c) Medium and its variants (papillary dermis).
d) Deep and its variants (reticular dermis).

The depth depends on several factors including the type of chemical used, the concentration of this chemical, skin type, time in contact with the skin (gel based peels), the number of layers applied to the skin (solution based peels), the application technique and how the skin was prepared before the peeling. (pre-peeling phase.)

This classification helps to choose the chemical in accordance with the depth of the lesion to be treated, taking into account that this is not absolute and emphasizing that any chemical agent, depending on the various factors mentioned above, can change its action and behave as a superficial / medium or medium / deep peeling.

Very superficial (stratum corneum)

• 30% Salicylic Acid - One or more layers.
• glycolic acid - 1 to 2 layers, less than 5 minutes.
• Melaspeel - 1 to 2 layers

Comparison between the type of lesion and class of peel you choose
Based on the depth needed and according to the histological events of each pathology, making clear that epidermal skin lesions, only need focal treatment, while lesions that need the dermis modified, especially photo-aging should work in the first as well as the second skin layer.

Factors which affect the depth of peels.
The depth achieved depends on many variables, including:
- Concentration of the active ingredient used.
- In gel peels, depth depends on contact time.
- In solution peels, depth depends on how many layers are applied
- The application technique; massaging will increase the depth.
- The frequency of application.
- Integrity of the epidermis.
- Proper cleaning and degreasing of the skin before treatment
- Skin preparation in the weeks leading up to the peeling
- Thickness of the skin
- The type of skin (thin or thick, tenderness, presence of a skin disease ...)
- The anatomical location of the area to exfoliate (face or non-facial area)

ACTION MECHANISM

Chemical peeling causes alterations in the skin by three mechanisms.

• Stimulation of epidermal growth through removal of the stratum corneum, dermal thickening by mild peeling at the papillary dermis level.
• Destruction of specific layers of damaged skin, depending on the depth of the lesion.
• Activation of inflammatory mediators, which induces the production of new collagen and fundamental dermal substance.

In the case of injury, after the initial epidermal injury caused by the application of the chemical agent, there is an initial migration of keratinocytes in the edges of the wound and the epithelium of the annexes at the base of the lesion. Later, cell proliferation from the edges of the wound increase with the objective of forming new cells to cover the injury. From an anatomical point of view, the skin of the face is different from the regions of the body because of the relatively large number of pilosebaceous units, resulting in a faster re-epithelialization. The nose and forehead have more sebaceous glands than the cheeks. Due to this, facial scarring always increases as you move from the center of the face to the periphery.

CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE THE PEELING
Based on the indications for chemical peels, all patients should be examined to determine which of the peeling agents produce the desired result with the least amount of aggressiveness, according to the patient's lifestyle, the depth of the lesions to be corrected and general characteristics of the skin to be treated.
An important consideration to prevent damage is to evaluate the skin photo type of the patient. To do this we will use the Fitzpatrick classification.
This information is very useful in determining which patients will respond well to a chemical peeling and which will be more easily irritated by the chemical peel, or run a high risk of pigmentation (dyschromia) after the procedure. Skin types I to III are ideal for all peeling types where types IV to VI have a greater risk of developing dyschromia.

The prior ingestion of oral retinoids should be taken into account, since they may lead to poor healing especially in medium and deep peels. They also boost of the effects of different peeling agents to reduce epidermal thickness and keratinocyte cohesion.

Smoking history, intake or use of photosensitizing drugs and pigmentation boosters, and previous or recent herpes outbreaks are of vital importance to prevent poor or delayed healing, pigmentation and extensive viral rashes respectively.
In case of recurrent herpes, Acyclovir is recommended 1 week before the peeling, do not peel active herpes.

IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF CHEMICAL PEELING

1. Concentration of the active ingredients

The higher concentration, the greater potential, greater effectiveness and greater irritability.

2. pH of the peeling

As the pH increases, this indicates there is a higher concentration of ingredients in the form of salt compared to acid (active ingredient).
Important to assess the concentration of free acid and have criteria to select a suitable peeling.

If pH = pKa the formula contains a 50% of free acid and 50% of salt.

If pH>pKa in the formula, salt predominates, less potential

If pH < pka acid="" formula,="" greater="" in="" potential

3. Texture of the peeling
GEL
- Depth of the peeling related to the contact time.
- Contact time: 5-10 minutes. (Depending of the active ingredient and the precautions described above.)
- Clean in order to neutralize.
- Slow penetration: less irritation.

SOLUTION

- Depth of the peeling related to the quantity of the solution applied → apply by layers.
- Wait 3 minutes between each layer
Massaging (gel) or pressure applied (solution) can enhance the penetration of the peeling.

PHASES

The therapeutic success of a chemical peel, not only has to do with an appropriate choice for the patient of the exfoliating agent and proper application technique, but also compliance with the following three stages (b, c, d) which are:
a) PRE-PEELING.
b) PEELING.
c) POST-PEELING.
d) RE-PEELING

PRE-PEELING

Prepare the skin 4 weeks before the peeling using topical substances that thin the stratum corneum (retinoic acid, alpha hydroxy acids), the use of sunscreens and skin lightening agents reducing the risk of post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation.
Avoid using corticosteroids because they interfere in the inflammatory process, which is important for reepithelialization, if possible also avoid the use of estrogens and oral contraceptives, which increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, or otherwise initiate the use of previous depigmenting agents.

Provide the patient with information and instructions about the type of peel to be performed to better understand and clarify the procedures and doubts, so the patient knows exactly what to expect.
Signing an informed consent is recommended.

PEELING

Clinical documentation performed with:
Control photos (front and sides). Patients usually forget their appearance before the procedure and habitually point a pre-existing “defect” from before the peeling.
List of important stages that should be checked during the course of the peeling.

Signing of informed consent and adequate clarification.
Instructions, in writing, to be followed in the post-peel (avoid sun and direct heat sources during the first week, constant use of sunscreen and antioxidants during the day.)

List of necessary materials to perform peelings

• Small container for mixing (if required).
• Appropriate Cleansing (makeup remover) & tonic
• Degreasing solution
• Silkses (silicone) to protect mucous membranes or sensitive areas (lips, nostrils).
• Sensyses solution (calming solution)
• non-sterile gloves.
• Gauze.
• Q-tips.
• Container with water.
• Skin Cleaning solution.
• Fan.
• Camera.
• Post-peel cream (Hidraloe facial cream or Silkses)
• Soothing masks.

Peeling precautions
- Be careful with the patient's eyes to avoid contact with product.
- Keep the head slightly elevated by an average of 45 °.
- Have on hand a bottle on hand with clean water or saline to wash the eyes, in case of accident.
- Before you apply the exfoliating agent, ask if:

There was recent facial hair removal.
There was recent surgery on the face or neck.
There is the use of systematic tretinoin or topical isotretinoin in recent months.
A rejuvenating treatment was performed recently .. (Microdermabrasion, IPL, fractional laser...).

If any of these questions are positive, the reaction may be more intense to the peeling.

- Any patient submitting to a medium or deep peeling with a history of herpes simplex should be subjected to a specific therapy a week before the procedure.
- The stinging or burning sensation associated with chemical peels is short, not constant and increases during the procedure. It is important to warn patients in advance what they will be feeling and reassure them that will be for a short time and is normal during the treatment.
- Post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation is a condition in which an inflammatory response of the skin leads to the development of hyper pigmentation. Usually it is associated with dark-skinned patients and sun exposure after the peel. The treatment of this condition can be simply waiting a time because it tends to disappear gradually over time. Another alternative is to start a therapy with bleaching and photo protective agents. The pigmentation may occur in the post peeling stage (four to five days) or as late as two months after the peeling.
- Never do chemical peels if pregnant or nursing.

What implications does nanotechnology have in the field of cosmetic dermatology? After years of research, Sesderma NanoDermatology found a way to make important active ingredients penetrate to the inner layers of the skin with a non-invasive topical application. Until now, skincare products remained in the upper layers of the epidermis due to the barrier function of the skin, and the low penetration capacity of large molecules, however often in the fields of dermatology and aesthetics, deeper structures such as hair follicles or sebaceous glands, and sometimes even the subcutaneous tissue needs to be reached, as in the case of cellulite.

The key to reaching these deeper layers is in nano and liposomal technology. Industry has many types of encapsulation techniques used in skin care, for example Liposomes composed silicone or nylon structures. Sesderma NanoDermatology, has gone further, by encapsulating the active ingredients in membrane structures identical to that of human cell membranes, so that our bodies do not consider them as foreign elements. This aids the nanometric size of the nanosomes (3000 times smaller than the pores of the skin). For the first time we can also combine in one product, fat-soluble and water-soluble active ingredients. To understand the importance of this, consider for example Vitamin C and its instability due to oxidization when it comes in contact with air. Vitamin C is a lipo-soluble active ingredient. If we take into account the structure of our skin, it becomes practically impossible for a water soluble active ingredient to pass through the same, but encapsulating the vitamin C in a phospholipid membrane (which is identical in structure to human cell membrane) and the nano size of this structure, we are transporting vitamin C where it is needed, and without barriers to stop it.

One of the advantages of nanotechnology is that a product can be applied topically and reach deeper skin layers. Imagine an elevator that can stop at multiple floors, where the nanosomes can only be opened only on specific floors. This approach allows us to successfully treat diseases whose target is in the depths of the epidermis, or even further, such as melasma. Most products do not reach the basal layer of the epidermis, much less deeper layers. Many of the “nanosomed” active ingredients are large particles such as hyaluronic acid and peptides like Matrixyl, which are used to relax wrinkles, this technology becomes effective with these active ingredients whose size normally would make it impossible for them to act deeply, where they are needed.

Nanosomes a have two “compartment” structure where liposoluble and hydrosoluble active ingredients can be transported in the same nanosome, for example vitamin C can be put in the heart of the nanosome (water soluble) and Vitamin E can be put in the bi-layer (fat soluble). Retinol is one of the favorite active ingredients of dermatologists for its many applications and benefits, it becomes more powerful in nanosomes but not as aggressive to the skin, and can even be used even in the most sensitive skins without causing irritation. Another important aspect is that the nanosomes are designed to arrive to the target layer of the skin but do not travel through the bloodstream.

There are thousands of applications for nanotechnology, not only in cosmetic dermatology, but in many fields such as the encapsulation of oxygen to treat ulcers and wounds or encapsulating antibodies to fight cancer, active ingredients that pass through impassable barriers, such as the brain for brain disease. This is only the beginning of a new technological era, where the application of thousands of nano moluecules guarantees the success in the cure for various diseases.

Who does not like to look healthy and shiny skin in summer?

At SeSDERMA laboratories we have some tips to follow which will protect you and let your skin speak for itself.

The first and the most important thing to do is use a sunscreen that will protect you from the sun's rays, which cause skin diseases. It is always advisable apply at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.

The blocking factor can be anything, but at least the SPF should be 30. However, it has nothing to do with the number of SPF, some people think that because a block has 50 SPF is better than a 30 SPF; the truth is that it is not.

The difference between them is that the first factor can be applied every 5 hours and the second every 3 hours but is important to remember that when a person tends to sweat, sunscreen may be effective for less hours.
In most sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, chest and arms it is necessary to apply more sunscreen.

On the other hand, you should exfoliate your body at least 2 times a month and your face twice a week to get rid of all impurities that accumulate in the skin.

Also, I recommend this summer to moisturize and hydrate your skin, because in this period you tend to sweat more and this causes the skin to lose moisture. You must use a moisturizer depending on the skin type you have and do not forget that you should drink lots of water. This will not only moisturize your skin on the outside, but inside.

Stretch Mark Info and tips

Stretch marks are lesions that usually manifest during a hormonal period: puberty and pregnancy. Under the hormonal effect, fibroblasts, the cells that are responsible for the architecture of our skin (made of collagen fibers and elastin), suffer from an imbalance that leads to the thinning (atrophy) and a breakdown of the collagen fibers and elastin. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and small parallel lines appear (striae). They initially can be pale pink, pink or purple and turn white with time.

During puberty stretch marks occur on the legs and hips, and during pregnancy on the abdomen, buttocks and breasts. During pregnancy, stretch marks may show up from the third month, however during the third trimester (6-9 months), is when the skin is most vulnerable. Stretch marks may also appear after pregnancy. It is therefore essential to make preventative treatment from the third month of pregnancy until the next pregnancy. Also, sudden changes in weight and violent physical exercises have a predisposition to aid in the development of stretch marks. In these cases, the skin has stretched so excessive that fibers are ruptured leading to stretch marks.

Distension of the skin is an aggravating factor, but not the only cause of the manifestation of stretch marks. Some diseases such as Cushing's syndrome can cause stretch marks without any skin tension.

Treatment

Stretch marks don’t heal by themselves and need treatment. Untreated stretch marks will evolve into scars.

The results of the treatment depend on two factors:

The age of the stretch mark.

The tone of the stretch mark:

If the mark is pink this is a sign that there still is vascularisation. White colored stretch marks are less likely to disappear.

There are three phases of treatment:

Preventative phase

With a prospective pregnancy or increased size it is advisable to undergo preventive treatment, with the purpose of maintaining or even increasing the skins elasticity.

Vascular phase

In this phase it is advisable to apply products to encourage production of glycosaminoglycans, collagen and elastin, activating tissue regeneration and providing active ingredients which repair and replace altered structures by improving tissue oxygenation and hydration.

Scaring phase

When it comes to stretch marks that have already formed scar tissue, vascularising action based on oxygenating and hydrating essential oils and bioactive substances that stimulate the regeneration process are necessary. The possibility of rebuilding the fibrous connective tissue using only cosmetic treatment is difficult, and should be assisted by medical treatments and apparatus to simultaneously in order to improve treatment results.

Psoriasis is a non-contagious autoimmune disease affecting roughly 3% of the world’s population. It is a chronic, reoccurring disease that affects the skin and joints, appearing as irregular red, dry, scaly patches on the skin. These patches or “plaques” are caused by excessive skin production. Rapidly accumulating skin eventually takes on a whitish appearance. Most often psoriasis is found on knees and elbows, but can affect many areas, ranging from small patches to large sections of the body (and in its most severe form the entire body).

The exact cause of psoriasis has yet to be found, however researchers know genetics play a key role in its development. Factors that can worsen psoriasis include stress, climate change, and smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Psoriasis can be controlled; however as of now there is no complete cure. Bath oils, body milks, and moisturizers can reduce dryness and discomfort. Professional treatment of severe psoriasis varies a lot by patient, and should be advised by a dermatologist. These can include medicated creams, laser treatments, UV light treatments, immunosuppressant medications, and other medications.

Halloween skin care tips

Halloween is just around the corner! We hope that everyone has gotten their costumes and plans all figured out.

If you plan to wear a costume that requires heavy makeup or facial paint, we have a few important tips to keep your skin looking good throughout the night, as well as preventing blemishes, and dry skin in the days following Halloween.

1) Thoroughly clean and hydrate your skin before applying your makeup or facial paint. Stay away from soap when cleaning your skin as it will dry it out a lot, instead stick to something that will better moisturize your skin. The climate in autumn is hard enough on dry skin alone, but smearing on heaps of heavy costume paint or theatrical makeup for several hours can really make things uncomfortable. Acne Causes, general measures and treatments

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by skin outbreaks around hair follicles. It is a common disease that mainly affects adolescents, but can also affect adults, especially those between 20 and 30 years of age. Acne may appear as different types such as comedones (blackheads), papules (red, hard bumps), pustules (pus grains) and more rarely cysts and abscesses. The lesions are located on the face and less often in the back, chest, shoulders and neck. Acne may be treated and there is no need to wait to for nature to resolve the problem as it is very difficult to predict how long it will take to disappear completely. Treatment can prevent the development of scars or marks, thus improving the complexion of the skin and physical appearance.

Acne is commonly caused by a series of hormonal changes that occur during adolescence. Sebaceous glands (located deep in the skin) produce an oily material called sebum caused by testosterone (male hormone). Sebum comes to the surface through small tubes (ducts) and their opening is a pore. Obstruction of the sebaceous ducts cause them to retain sebum, forming pimples, which can be:

-White or closed

-Black or open (blackheads)

The black colour is due to the action of air on retained sebum in the pores. Sometimes an excess of retained sebum in the ducts and the duct walls swell and burst, dispensing the sebum into the skin, resulting in the formation of red, hard pimples, (internal) or abscesses. Along with this, the sebum is retained in an ideal breeding ground for skin bacteria, causing more irradiation and inflammation.

Cushing´s syndrome

The use of anabolic steroids

Keratinization disorders

The use of medication containing halogens, lithium, barbiturates or androgens.
